Application Background

5-axis CNC tool grinders have become the mainstream solution for manufacturing and regrinding end mills, drills, form cutters, thread mills, and taps. Tool grinding involves complex geometries and tight tolerances, requiring grinding wheels that balance cutting efficiency, shape retention, heat control, and long-cycle stability—especially for automated or unattended production.

Machining Challenges

  1. Deep-flute and high-removal operations (Deep Fluting / Gashing / O.D. Grinding)
    Deep flute grinding generates heat and heavy load; insufficient heat dissipation or stability can cause burning, inconsistent surface finish, and dimensional drift. 
  2. Shape retention and dimensional consistency
    In 5-axis tool grinding, wheel profile directly defines tool geometry. Profile wear or deformation impacts tool angles, radii, and repeatability. 
  3. Dressing frequency and downtime
    Unattended production requires wheels that maintain cutting performance and profile for extended cycles with minimized dressing.
  4. High-precision small radius (R) and various V-angles
    Form cutters, thread tools, taps, and micro tools demand extremely precise radii and angles, which are difficult to hold without strong shape retention.

3) Metal Bond

  • Highest bond strength and outstanding shape retention, ideal for form grinding such as form grooves and radius grinding. 
  • Provides the longest service life and best shape retention, ensuring dimensional control after grinding. 
  • Meets high-precision requirements for extremely small radius (R) and various V angles on 5-axis CNC tool grinding centers.
